While the phrase “tis the season for giving” has significant relevance at this time of year, at Longo’s we are committed to giving back to our communities year round. We believe that family values are essential to community growth. And when we are able to participate in initiatives that help build and nurture stronger families and communities, we know that it’s simply the right thing to do.

As we count our blessings and celebrate the holidays with family and friends, it is also the time of year to reflect on what we've contributed together towards our mission to Inspire Healthy Families. While we could go into great detail about how we've donated over $1.1 million at the local and regional level to support local hospitals, children’s charities and kids' camps or how our signature charity golf tournament raised over $250,000 through the Longo’s Family Charitable Foundation (LFCF), I want to focus on the power of together.

Each year, Longo’s team members come together to volunteer their time and talents to various causes and events and additionally, they personally raise money for the following causes:

Inside Ride – this past spring we had 222 team members ride stationary bikes at our Support Center parking lot to support children, teenagers and their families living with and beyond cancer, raising over $60,000. In this past 5 years, our teams have raised a collective +$304,000 for the Inside Ride!

Neighbour in Need Food Drive – between our spring and fall food drives in 2014, we had 200 volunteers pack 10,000 bags to help support the needs of local food banks across the GTA. A big thank you to our volunteers and to our customers who help support their Neighbours in Need by purchasing one of these bags filled with high needed food items for local food banks.

Burlington Flood Relief – in support of the families in Burlington who suffered tremendous damage to their homes from the flood on August 4th, the LFCF contributed $25,000 to the Burlington Community Foundation Flood Relief Efforts. This amount was matched 2:1 by the province of Ontario. An in-store campaign to donate a Toonie at the cash raised an additional $5,000 towards the flood relief efforts.

Dress for the Cause - in October, a number of our Support Center team members participated in Dress for the Cause supporting breast cancer awareness. Our team raised $2,425 and the LFCF matched that amount for a grand total of $4,850. In 2 years, Longo’s team members and the LFCF have raised nearly $16,000 to support the cause.

Movember - for the month of November, we had 25 team members participate in support of changing the face of men’s health. This included 7 Mo-Sisters who helped raise awareness. Our “Longo’s NO-MO Cancer” team collectively raised $5,300 with the LFCF matching that amount for a grand total of $10,600. In 2 years, Longo’s team members and the LFCF have raised nearly $16,000 to support Movember.

Finally, as our wonderful team members celebrated the holiday season at our holiday party, proceeds from ticket sales were donated to local charities of their choice throughout the GTA. $21,000 was raised in support of United Way chapters in the Halton/Peel region, Yellow Brick House, Women’s Centre of York Region and the Jessica Foundation.

This is how we do our part to help build better communities. While our mission is to inspire healthy families, we continue to be inspired by the notion that “tis better to give than to receive”. For more information about how Longo’s Inspires Healthy Families through giving, visit and
